Elon, The Washington GOP Hardly Heard Ye—Here’s Why (Part 1)
Elon Musk may have already been consigned to the Trump World Wilderness, but that doesn’t gainsay his characterization of the OBBBA as an abomination. That’s because the latter is not merely disappointingly deficient in its level of spending cuts, as rightly pointed out by stalwarts like Rand Paul and Tom Massie. It’s also dead wrong as a policy and philosophical matter and likely marks a fatal historical inflection point on the road to fiscal disaster from which there is essentially no recovery.
Where OBBBA goes radically astray is that its dares to add several trillion dollars over the next decade to cumulative deficits that already total $26 trillion based on current spending and tax policy (including extension of the 2017 TCJA). And when you delete all the accounting chicanery, the honestly priced-out math of OBBBA is downright butt ugly: It would result in a doubling of the current $36 trillion public debt in just 11 years years.
